British Infantry Officer's Sword by J Read of Dublin Ref: 31.15

Item Description:

 

An interesting early 19th century sword by J Read of Dublin with the hilt formed with a stirrup guard and a lion's head pommel. The curved blade retains some of its original polish near the tip and is decorated on each side from the hilt with a series of gilt crescents of descending size, each within a blued circle, the series within a blue bordered grey panel. The sword is in good condition overall.

 

The grip is of wood, covered with black leather and bound with copper wire. The langets have lions' heads. The scabbard is of black leather with the name of the maker "J Read College Grn Dublin". Blade length 28.5 inches (72.5 cm) overall just under 33.5 (85 cm).
